Dr. Ruan attended Shandong Medical University, Jinan, China. He attended graduate school at LSU, Baton Rouge and received his Master of Natural Sciences in 1993. His formal medical training in the US includes an internship in the Department of Medicine, Worcester Medical Center, Worcester, MA from 1998 to 1999; Residency training in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, Milwaukee, WI, from 1999 to 2002; Clinical Interventional Pain Management Fellowship training in the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, MIfrom 2002 to 2003.

In Aug. 2012, Dr. Ruan joint the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology, Louisiana State University Health Science Center, New Orleans, LA, as a clinical associate professor. Dr. Ruan was appointed to the Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Pain & Relief as well as Editorial Board for Current Drug Abuse Reviews in March 2012. Dr. Ruan has also been on the Editorial Board for Pain Physician, official journal of American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) since 2007. Dr. Ruan also served as a former director at large at ASIPP from 211-2013. Dr. Ruan currently serves the President of Alabama Society of Addiction Medicine (ALASM) and Vice President of Alabama Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ALSIPP).

Dr. Ruan has published numerous publications in peer reviewed medical journals. His research interests are in the areas of optimization of intraspinal analgesic therapy, minimization of side effects associated intraspinal pump delivery therapy,acute pain management in patients on intrathecal opioid infusion for chronic pain, risk mitigation of opioid therapy.

Dr. Ruan has broken his own world record of having 7 medical board/subspecialty board certifications; on March 10, 2013, Dr. Ruan passed his 8th Medical Board Certification Exam, the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners, and thus has achieved 8 medical board/subspecialty board certifications in the United States, setting a new world record for the most medical board certifications,according to the World Record Academy.
